Apprentice heads to Westminster

An apprentice from Malvern Hills District Council will be making a visit to the heart of British democracy as part of National Apprenticeship Week.

Sam Gateley joined the council in November as a business administration apprentice in the planning department and helps support the work of the technical support team.

The 18-year-old will be part of a group of apprentices from across the county who will visit the House of Parliament on Wednesday 16 March, where they will receive a guided tour from Worcester MP Robin Walker, who is a Parliamentary Apprenticeship ambassador.

The trip has been organised by the Worcestershire Training Providers Association, which runs the county’s apprenticeship hub, and is part of National Apprenticeship Week which runs between 14 and 20 March.

Sam, who studied plumbing at college, said:  “I’m enjoying my time here. It’s given me the opportunity to gain some experience of the world of work while getting paid for it at the same time. It’s also opened up another career path I hadn’t previously considered and may pursue in the future.”

Jack Hegarty, Chief Executive of Malvern Hills District Council, said: “Apprenticeships are an invaluable way of filling the skills gap many companies face as well as helping young people take their first step on the career ladder. I’d urge businesses to seriously consider taking on an apprentice.”

Malvern Hills District Council has committed to working with businesses to create 50 new apprenticeships a year up until 2021 to help local young people secure their first job.

Financial support is available to companies from both national government and through the council’s own grant scheme to cover the cost of taking on an apprentice.

More information is available at a free event being held on 23 March between 12.30pm and 2pm at Morgan Motor Company. There will be the chance to hear from Steve Morris, Managing Director of Morgan Motor Company, about how apprentices have benefitted his business as well as the funding opportunities available.
