Loss of trade grant – for flood affected businesses
Recognising that many businesses in the Malvern Hills district were hard hit by flooding this year, MHDC have pulled together a new grant specifically targeted at independent businesses that suffered significant loss of trade as a result of flooding.
The £500 loss of trade grant is likely to be of particular benefit to the businesses based in Upton-upon-Severn who suffered significantly from prolonged road closures and also saw a dramatic decrease in footfall, as well as traffic.
MHDC has been working with Upton Town Council, Business Association and Town Partnership representatives who have highlighted that a small grant to recognise the loss of trade suffered by the traders in the town would be well received and provide many with vital help in managing cash flow in small businesses.
Cllr Phil Grove, portfolio holder for Economic Development explained "We have lobbied hard for extra resources to help our districts businesses recover from the recent flooding and I am particularly pleased that we will be able to support those traders in the Upton area who suffered from a very tough trading period whilst most of the towns main routes were closed."
Annette Keyworth of the Upton Business Association said "‘It's been a really difficult time for Upton businesses and we have been grateful for the support of local shoppers but this funding will be invaluable to Upton businesses that have seen significant loss of trade. We are looking forward to working closely with Malvern Hills District Council and others to promote Upton as Open for Business‘
MHDC will manage the grant scheme to support small and medium sized businesses in flood affected areas of Malvern Hills district that have suffered a significant loss of trade due to flooding between 1st December 2013 – 28th February 2014. A single grant payment of £500 is available for eligible businesses. The business must be independent (i.e. not have the support of a national chain).
It is estimated that with 100% take up of a £500 grant by the c.80 businesses in Upton this would account for a maximum of£40,000 of funding. The Council are working closely with the Upton Business Association and the Town Council to ensure all eligible businesses apply for the grant. Applications will be accepted until 30 May 2014.
