Tweet your Leap Day proposal

Ladies planning a leap year proposal could bag themselves a discounted wedding venue thanks to Malvern Hills District Council and social media.

Traditionally men are normally the ones who get down on one knee and ask their loved one to marry them. But legend has it that an Irish nun called St Brigid struck a deal with St Patrick to allow women to propose to men every four years on leap day, 29 February, which this year is on Monday.

To mark the occasion Malvern Hills District Council is offering a 50 per cent discount on the normal hire fee for the Elgar Room at the Council House in Malvern, to the first three women who tweet a picture of their proposal to @MHDCcomms.

The Elgar Room is fully licensed for civil ceremonies and is situated within the Council House with its many Victorian features and ornate grand staircase.

Louise Anthony, property and facilities officer at Malvern Hills District Council, said: “Times may have moved on but the leap year proposal is still a tradition many people observe so we thought we’d mark it in a special way. We’re looking forward to seeing those proposal pictures and welcoming the three happy couples to the Elgar Room.”
