LOCAL HERO WINS COMMUNITY AWARD
In July the Malvern Gazette newspaper launched
a search to find Malvern’s unsung hero – a community champion whose
tireless efforts have helped others possibly less fortunate than
themselves.
Working in partnership with Malvern Hills
District Council and QinetiQ, the Gazette invited nominations from
members of the public for this new ‘Community Hero
Award’.
The search is now over! At a ceremony
held at the Council House last Friday 5th August, the
winner, Reginald Box was presented with his certificate together
with a cheque for £250 to be donated to the charity of his
choice. In just 16 years, 93 year old Reginald has raised a
massive £112,750 for the Midlands Air Ambulance by holding a range
of fund raising events including bingo and entertainment nights in
local pubs and sports clubs.
Known by many throughout the district, Reg is
a true local legend and has many tales to tell about his colourful
life - ex professional football goalkeeper (Malvern Town), war
veteran and accomplished singer to name but a few of his
achievements,
The panel of judges was made up of John Murphy, Editor of the
Malvern Gazette, Chris Bocock, Chief Executive MHDC and Adam Palser
from QinetiQ.
Chief Executive Chris Bocock said:
“This is an excellent opportunity to recognise and reward
the unsung heroes of our district. Their selfless commitment to
improving the lives of those around them should absolutely be
celebrated. Choosing just one winner from the many fantastic
individuals serving this area was not easy and all those nominated
should be congratulated - they are all worthy of this
honour.”
