Olympic Torch coming to Malvern Hills
More precise details of the Olympic Torch
Relay route have just been announced and they include great news
for the Malvern Hills district. The Torch will be travelling
along the A449 from Worcester, passing directly through Powick,
Malvern Link, Great Malvern and Malvern Wells where it will
continue through to Ledbury.
Councillor Barbara Williams, Portfolio
Holder for Community & Economic Development at Malvern Hills
District Council said:
“This is thrilling news! We are very
excited that the Torch Relay will be travelling through our
district as it is very much a once in a lifetime opportunity to
share in the Olympic spirit. Now that we know which
communities will be hosting the Torch we can begin to think about
how we can make the day a celebration for the whole district.”
These latest details of the route show that
100% of the Worcestershire population will be no more than one hour
away from the Olympic Flame as it passes through the region. It
will be an opportunity for communities to welcome the flame, to
cheer the torchbearers and to extend an invitation to surrounding
communities to join in with the celebrations marking the countdown
to the start of the Games.
Do you know an incredible individual that
deserves to be part of the Olympic legacy and carry the Paralympic
Flame as it passes through the district?
Malvern Hills District Council is
searching for local people that have supported or inspired persons
with disabilities locally to become torchbearers as the Olympic
flames comes to the Malvern Hills.
It could be a disabled person who has achieved
personal success, the teacher who removes barriers to include
pupils with a disability in sport, the family member who cares for
someone with a disability or many others.
Anyone can be a Paralympic Torchbearer whether
you are disabled or not.
