Energy surveys available for homes
Transition Malvern Hills has secured funding from the Area of
Outstanding National Beauty (AONB) that will help residents see how
efficient their homes are by surveys using thermal imaging
technology. This funding will allow the organisation to offer
free energy surveys for houses that are in or near the boundary to
the AONB. The offer is on a first come, first served basis as
the initial funding will only cover 125 properties. However,
once the funding has run out they intend to keep the project going
by offering the surveys for a discounted price of £50 per property
and this offer will be open to all residents, even if you do not
live in the AONB.
Funding for the scheme has come from the
AONB’s Sustainable Development Fund, through the Malvern Hills
Partnership (MHP). MHP, steered by Malvern Hills District
Council, is a partnership organisation whose members work together
to identify the gaps in service provision across the Malvern Hills
district and then commission work programmes to redress the
balance.
The survey will take two hours and involves
using thermal imaging cameras to monitor every room or space in the
house. As soon as the survey is finished, homeowners will
immediately be given advice on how to improve leaks and poor
insulation and will also be given a DVD of the survey with
dialogue. The surveyor can also install an energy monitoring
action pack that assesses electricity, gas and water consumption
which homeowners can keep for one month from the date of the
survey. In addition, some households will qualify for free
help from a handyman for the installation of draught proofing,
insulation or secondary glazing.
Transition Malvern Hills is also seeking ‘Hot
Spotters’ to help promote the project to neighbours, family and
friends and to accompany/assist the surveyor. This is an
important part of the scheme as it will help to dispel any worries
householders might have about inviting a stranger into their
home.
