Street Names

In 2004 Malvern Hills District Council formerly adopted the street naming and numbering procedures in the Public Health Act 1925.  The council’s policy is also advised by the Town Improvement Clauses Act, Section 64 and 65 and based upon the data entry conventions and best practice for the National Land and Property Gazetteer (NLPG).  The NLPG is owned and licenced by the Local Government Information House and is an implementation of the British Standard, BS 7666:2006 Parts 1 and 2.

It is the council's statutory responsibility to allocate house names/numbers and road names to new developments and to give consent to any changes to the address of existing properties.

If your property has a postal number but you wish to allocate a name to your property, you may apply to the Street Naming and Numbering Officer.  Please note, that the name is an addition to the existing address and the property number must be retained otherwise this will causes problems for deliveries and for the Emergency Services.

If your property has a name and no property number and you wish to change the name you should also apply to the Street Naming and Numbering Officer.  You should include the full current address and the proposed new name and checks will be made to ensure there is no duplication with a nearby property.

New street names are decided upon after consultation with the Developers, Councillors, Royal Mail and the Emergency Services and where possible are based on the history of the development site.

If you are a developer you should notify us of new roads and register new addresses with us as soon as possible and certainly before the properties are occupied.  Please follow the on-line instructions and complete the forms for new developments/roads or single properties.

The council is not responsible for allocating postal codes, this is the responsibility of Royal Mail and any queries relating to this should be directed to their customer services.  The authority must notify new addresses to Royal Mail before a postcode can be assigned.

Any queries should be sent in writing to Street Naming and Numbering Officer, The Council House, Avenue Road, Malvern WR14 3AF or via e-mail or by contacting the hub on 01684 862151.
