To be considered for backdating you must show good reasons why you did not claim earlier and that you were unable to claim throughout the whole period that you are requesting backdating for.

You must make a request for backdating in writing.
This can be in the form of a letter, or if you are completing a Housing
and Council Tax Benefit application form

apply.
We will look at your request and write to you with our decision. We aim to make our decision within 14 days of your request although it may take longer at busier times.
If we refuse to backdate your claim you have the opportunity to pursue a formal appeal which must be requested in writing.
