Contaminated Land

The Council produced a strategy for inspecting the whole of the district for contaminated land which was adopted at Full Council in June 2001. Following this a post of Contaminated Land Officer was created in order to proceed with the timetable of inspection.

Issues of land contamination are dealt with where possible through the development control process of Planning Services. Where this is not possible and an issue of land contamination arises the onus initially lies with the person or persons who deposited the polluting material on or in the land to deal with the contamination. Where the waste originator cannot be traced the responsibility for remediating the land then lies with the owner or owners of the land.
