1. Ideally your compost bin needs to be situated in the garden on bare soil. If this is not possible, ensure there is a layer of soil or existing compost on the bottom so tht worms can colonise.
2. You can fill your kitchen waste with everything from vegetables and fruit peelings to teabags, paper towels and eggshells.
3. Empty the kitchen waste into the compost bin. A mixture of kitchen and soft garden waste makes great compost.
4. It takes between 6 and 9 months for the compost to become ready for use, so just sit back and wait and keep adding to it.
5. You know your compost is ready for use when it is a dark crumbly material which looks like a thick, moist soil. It will smell earthy and fresh.
6. When it is time to collect your compost you need to lift the bin slightly (or open the hatch at the bottom) and scoop out the fresh compost.
7. Use your home grown compost to enrich borders, vegetable patches and feeding the lawn.
