Street Names

It is the council's responsibility to allocate house names/numbers and road names to new developments and to give consent to any changes to the address of existing properties.

If your property has a postal number but you wish to allocate a name to your property, then your name can only be used on an informal basis and will not be registered by the council, as replacing postal numbers with a name causes complications for deliveries as well as for the Emergency Services. You can erect a name plaque on your property and quote the name in the address along with the postal number, but your property will always be known by the number.

If your property has a name and no property number and you wish to change the name then consent must be gained from the Council. A request to change the name should be submitted in writing along with a location plan where possible. You should include the full current address and the proposed new name and checks will be made to ensure there is no duplication with a nearby property.

New street names are decided upon after consultation with the Developers, Councillors, Royal Mail and the Emergency Services and where possible are based on the history of the development site.

If you would like any further information about Street Naming, or would like to report an issue with a Street Name sign, please contact Customer Services:
