Joint statement regarding Syrian refugees
Following a meeting of Worcestershire council leaders on Monday, 21 September 2015 the following statement has been issued on their behalf.
Worcestershire council leaders have agreed to support submitting a joint Worcestershire bid to take part in the Syrian Vulnerable Persons Relocation scheme.
The bid will be subject to the Government agreeing to fund the scheme for the full five years and the agreement of other public organisations locally.
The decision follows a meeting of the Worcestershire Leaders' Board on 21 September.
Cllr Simon Geraghty, who chaired the meeting of the Worcestershire Leaders' Board, said:
"Providing a safe haven for some of the most vulnerable people caught up in the Syrian conflict will require a carefully co-ordinated package of support provided by a number of different organisations.
"That's why we need the right resources from government over the next five years in order to successfully help them to integrate fully into the community.
"Discussions are taking place between various organisations to determine what resources are available locally whilst we wait for confirmation regarding the funding."
