Views wanted on Kempsey Neighbourhood Plan

Residents in Kempsey can have their say on proposed plans for future development in the village and surrounding area.

The draft Kempsey Neighbourhood Plan covers the period between 2016 and 2030 and sets out a vision and policies to guide development in the parish.

This includes potential new housing, community, recreation and sports facilities, as well as the protection of heritage assets and the gap between Kempsey and Worcester.

Neighbourhood Plans are a key part of the Government’s localism agenda to give local people more of a say on issues such as where new homes, shops and offices should be built, and the design of new developments.

Kempsey Parish Council has produced the document, after working with the local community, and has now submitted it to Malvern Hills District Council for final public consultation. This will start on Friday, January 13 and run until 5pm on Friday, 24 February.

Once the consultation is completed, the document will be subject to an independent examination and if approved a referendum will be held. If more than 50 per cent of voters in the parish back the plan, it will become part of the development plan, sitting alongside the South Worcestershire Development Plan, and will be used when making future planning decisions regarding Kempsey parish.

Cllr Melanie Baker, portfolio holder for planning and housing on Malvern Hills District Council, said: “I congratulate the community of Kempsey on the production of this draft plan. It’s an important document which will guide the way the area grows and develops in future so it’s really important the people of Kempsey let us have their views on the plan and its proposals.”

Cllr Ann Smith, Chair of the Kempsey Neighbourhood Plan Steering Group, said: “The Neighbourhood Plan aims to ensure that Kempsey parish continues to be an identifiable, sustainable rural community with facilities to cater for the needs of the residents and local businesses. Once published, the Neighbourhood Plan will be a material consideration in the determination of planning applications and it will be a powerful tool shaping the area”.

The plan is available to view online at where people can also take part in the consultation by downloading and filling in the response form.
