Energy Efficiency

Our aim is to improve energy efficiency within all homes in the district to help protect the environment and improve Housing Standards. To do this we offer advice and guidance on ways for you to save money at home by switching energy tariffs and using energy more efficiently, thereby reducing your household bills.

We work in partnership with Act on Energy who offer specialist energy efficiency advice and information about grants and financial assistance to help you insulate and heat your home making it warmer, healthier and more energy efficient.

Warmer Worcestershire

Act on Energy are the lead contact for the Warmer Worcestershire network is a partnership between public and voluntary sector organisations including Worcestershire County Council, District Councils, Public Health, Herefordshire and Worcestershire Fire Service and Age UK Herefordshire and Worcestershire.  Act on Energy run and operate the Freephone energy advice line 0800 988 2881 for the network.

The network aims to reduce fuel poverty and CO2 emissions in the County by delivering around the following objectives:

  • Encourage energy efficiency improvements in homes
  • Help vulnerable residents understand the links between effectively heating the home and the impact on their health
  • Support delivery of the cold weather plan for Worcestershire
  • Keep updated on winter advice and top tips to help you cope

The Warmer Worcestershire project produced a thermal image fly over in 2008 of the county enabling households to see the heat loss in their home. The data on the map will of course have changed for those households who have improved the energy efficiency of their homes, but if you haven't carried out any improvements since 2008 the details of the thermal map may still be relevant to your household.  Take a look at the Heat Loss Map.

Worcestershire Energy Switch

Worcestershire County Council is working with group buying experts iChoosr to help as many residents as possible with the opportunity to find a better deal on their electricity and gas bills. Malvern Hills District Council along with other districts in the County have signed up to take part in this collective switching and will be promoting this to our residents over the next few auctions. The first auction date is Tuesday 10 October and we will be encouraging our residents to take part online and in paper format. Act on Energy will be promoting and enabling our residents to take part with various events throughout the districts. Please use the link below to see where these events are being held.

By harnessing the power of collective action we can gather a large number of people who want to switch supplier easily and who want to pay less for their energy, iChoosr then organise an auction. The supplier who offers the cheapest tariffs gets to offer registrants a new contract. After the auction they receive a personal offer and can see how much money they might save.

Those who register for the scheme can consider the offer before deciding whether or not to switch suppliers and there is no charge to join the scheme.

The amount of money that can be saved will vary depending on individual factors such as the current tariff, payment method, consumption and the winning bid. There is no guarantee that an offer will be the cheapest but the model aims to ensure the majority of participants are offered lower annual energy bills than they are currently paying or are available at the time of the offer. Renewable Energy Advice

The following technologies produce renewable energy in the form of heat or electricity.  They provide an alternative to power sources based on non-renewable fossil fuels.

  • Solar Thermal Hot Water
  • Solar Photovoltaics (PV)
  • Ground Source Heat Pumps
  • Air Source Heat Pumps
  • Wind Turbines
  • Wood Fuelled Heating (Biomass)
  • Small Scale Hydro

The electricity generating technologies may also qualify for funding through the government's Feed In Tariff (FIT) scheme.  The heat producing technologies may qualify for the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) scheme.  These are regular payments made based on how much energy is produced rather than an up-front grant.  You will need to claim FITS through any energy supplier that subscribes to the FIT scheme, but RHI applications have to be made on-line through the government website or call 0300 003 0744 if you need help.

FIT's provide a payment for each unit of electricity regardless of how it is used.  In addition, households can then use the free electricity that they generate in their home and export any surplus to the national grid for a further payment.  Both schemes require a current EPC for the property where the renewable technology is installed and in the case of the FIT scheme, the EPC must at least reach Band D and dated prior to the renewable technology installation.

Please be aware that these schemes change frequently and funding is limited.

Smart Meters

The roll-out of smart meters will play an important part in Britain's transition to a low-carbon economy and help us meet some of the long-term challenges we face in ensuring an affordable, secure and sustainable energy supply.
Consumers will have near real time information on their energy consumption to help them manage their energy use, save money and reduce emissions. Smart meters will also provide consumers with more accurate information and bring an end to estimated billing.
