Community projects in need of support to help recover from Covid-19 pandemic

Malvern Hills District Council is encouraging residents to donate whatever they can to a range of community projects.

The projects, which are raising funds through crowdfunding platform Spacehive, aim to help communities recover from the Coronavirus pandemic. They focus on food poverty, social isolation, volunteering, improving wellbeing and helping people into work.

Crowdfunding offers a way to raise funds rapidly by connecting people with local causes.

Anyone can back a campaign with as little as £2 and can do so safely online.

Councils provide funding pots across a number of rounds and the rest is made up with donations from communities, councils, local businesses and foundations.

The projects in need of support are:

  • Eastham Community Garden: this project aims to raise £6,587 to enhance the outside area of Eastham Memorial Hall. This will encourage social interaction between young and old residents, as well as provide a relaxing environment.
  • Malvern Dementia Meeting Centre: the Parish of Malvern Link and Cowleigh are hoping to raise £20,163 to develop and Dementia Meeting Centre in Malvern Link. The funds will go towards transforming the space over the next year including upgrading the toilets and implementing non-slip and accessible flooring.
  • Support Malvern Special Families: Malvern Special Families aim to raise £5,508 to provide stimulating and fun activities for the children of Worcestershire with disabilities. This will be through school clubs and weekend clubs with activities such as kayaking, cooking and swimming.
  • Maggs Malvern for the homeless: Maggs Day Centre is hoping to raise £26,868 to extend their 12-month pilot of Malvern Day Centre for another 12 months. This will be to address people's short term needs (e.g. accessing food, warmth and shelter) which will then enable longer-term engagement (e.g. finding a home and addressing any issues they face).
  • Suckley Beer, Food and Gift Fest: The Suckley Beer Food & Gift (BFG) Festival is an annual festival held in Church Lane Suckley every September and all profits go to SPACE Charity. They are hoping to raise £970 to purchase a marquee to protect bands and guests at the festival.

Malvern Hills District Council has pledged funds to a number of these projects through the People Make Places fund and councillor ward budgets.

Cllr Sarah Rouse, Leader of Malvern Hills District Council, said: "We understand that it is an extremely difficult time for everyone at the moment but what is evident is the community spirit within our district. We are asking residents to harness this and help back local projects that support the most vulnerable and those hardest hit by this pandemic. Crowdfunding is a great way for individuals, businesses, organisations and councils to give as much as they can afford to make a difference to people's lives".

In July, MHDC made a pot of £25,000 available through the People Make Places Fund and helped six projects successfully reach their fundraising targets. The remaining funds were linked in with Worcestershire County Council's fund which is called Crowdfund Worcestershire.

MHDC has also made £150,000 through the People Make Places: Ticket to Ride Fund available across three years (six rounds of funding) to support local community transport projects. The maximum amount pledged to a project from the council will be £50,000 or 50 per cent of the total project costs.
