Free parking to support traders in Barnards Green

Malvern Hills District Council is introducing free parking in one of its car parks to support businesses in Barnards Green affected by roadworks.

From now, and up to and including Sunday 4 July, people will be able to park for free in the council's pay and display car park on Geraldine Road.

The decision follows the announcement by Severn Trent that work to replace old pipes in Barnards Green Road, which began in May and was due to finish next week, has been delayed.

This means free parking bays, which traders rely on to allow customers to easily access their business, will be out of action for longer than expected.

Cllr Daniel Walton, Portfolio Holder for Economic Development on Malvern Hills District Council, said: "The fact these roadworks were allowed to happen, less than a month after lockdown restrictions on non-essential retail ended is bad enough, but for them not to be completed on time is unacceptable and a further blow to businesses in Barnards Green.

"We urge Severn Trent to do everything they can to make sure there are no more delays to these works and we will continue to monitor and review the situation. We will also be talking to Worcestershire County Council who need to assert greater control over when utilities companies can dig up roads, particularly at a time when businesses are trying to rebuild from the impact of Covid-19 restrictions.

"By offering free parking at our Geraldine Road Car Park for the next two weeks we are supporting our traders and residents who need to access the many wonderful shops, cafes and other businesses in Barnards Green."
