Malvern Hills District Council has been flying the rainbow flag in celebration of LGBT+ History Month.
LGBT+ History Month is an annual celebration which runs throughout February and aims to promote equality and inclusivity, as well as teach people about lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender history, and the history of the gay rights and related civil rights movements.
In support of the event, the Pride flag has been flown above the Council House in Malvern throughout this month.
Out2gether is a South-Worcestershire based group for the LGBT+ community, their friends and allies which was established in 2017. To celebrate the month, they have been holding virtual events on their Facebook page including quizzes, guest speakers and more.
Nicola Longworth-Cook, Co-Founder of Out2gether, said: "I was delighted to see the rainbow Pride flag flying above Malvern Hills District Council offices. It's great to see LGBT+ History Month remembered by our local council. It made me smile in the middle of a tough week as my wife and I have recently been victims of a hate crime with an attack on our home. Seeing the LGBT+ pride flag flying made me feel better about living in Malvern and reminded me that people are on the whole accepting and supportive."
Cllr Sarah Rouse, Leader of Malvern Hills District Council, said: "We are proud to be flying the flag in celebration of LGBT+ History Month. Whilst this month is a time to recognise how far we have come, shockingly, hate crime towards the LGBT+ community still occurs. We want to promote acceptance and diversity across our communities, as well as send out the message that prejudice and violence will not be tolerated."
