A new community drop-in session is being set up to support Ukrainians and other resettled communities who are living in the Malvern Hills district.
The Welcome Hub is a weekly drop-in space for individuals and families who have resettled in the district, including people who are part of the Government’s Homes for Ukraine scheme.
The hub will be held from an existing community venue in Great Malvern and plans are being finalised to ensure it can open safely whilst protecting vulnerable users.
The aim of the hub is to provide a welcoming and safe environment where people who have settled locally can access English language support, wellbeing activities, social connection, and practical guidance.
It will also act as a shared space for residents, community groups, and volunteers who wish to participate in cultural and wellbeing events.
This model is building on the successful weekly Help Centre located at Malvern Town Football Club, which supported over 1,200 residents last year.
The project is being co-ordinated by local voluntary and community organisations working closely with Malvern Hills District Council (MHDC).
It is being funded by the Government’s Homes for Ukraine scheme which is delivered by MHDC and Worcestershire County Council.
Jennie Watkins, Portfolio Holder for Communities at Malvern Hills District Council, said: “We hope this drop-in will provide a welcoming and safe space for members of our resettled community. Malvern Hills has a strong commitment to community support and inclusion, with resettled families and individuals contributing positively to local schools, employment, and volunteering.
“A special thanks to ‘Malvern Welcomes’ and its role in the support and integration for individuals and families in the district. Who have, over a decade, worked tirelessly to nurture a culture of welcome in which people fleeing violence and the horrors of war can live fulfilled and happy lives as part of the community.
“The hub aims to enhance wellbeing, connection, and resilience for all members of our community, whilst building community cohesion. The council has a corporate commitment to accelerate the development of community hubs for wellbeing across the district, with a focus on accessibility and inclusivity.”
