NEWS: Children across the district can help reduce food waste with new Food Champ competition

Children across the Malvern Hills District are being encouraged to be more aware of what happens to their food with a new competition.

Malvern Hills District Council (MHDC) is challenging young people across the district to complete the ultimate Food Champ Checklist to learn more about food waste and how they can play a part to reduce it.

The checklist challenge involves checking expiry dates, making a meal, and creating a fun fruit and vegetable picture.

Completed lists will receive a certificate and the honour of becoming a Food Champ to impress friends and family.

Entries will also be entered into a prize draw to win an educational sticker book and a ‘grow your own’ seed kit.

According to ‘Let’s Waste Less’, each year, UK households waste the equivalent of 15 billion edible meals and the average family in Worcestershire throws away an incredible £720 worth of edible food each year.

MHDC is aiming to spread the message that families could save money and help the environment by reducing the amount of food they throw away.

Cllr Jeremy Owenson, Portfolio Holder for the Environment at Malvern Hills District Council, said: “This competition is a great way to raise awareness of the impact of food waste and also encourage the reduction of food waste in the home, we are really looking forward to seeing completed checklists and fun drawings”.

To enter the competition, visit www.malvernhills.gov.uk/food-waste to download the checklist and view competition terms and conditions.

The closing date for this competition is 1 December 2025.
