NEWS: Malvern Hills District Council to be first in the county to launch household food waste collection service

Malvern Hills District Council (MHDC) will be the first council in Worcestershire to deliver a household food waste collection service.

From 5 October 2026, MHDC will be rolling out the new service gradually in homes across the district.

Residents will be contacted directly when it is their turn and will be provided with everything they will need.

They will receive a kitchen caddy (for inside), roll of linersfood waste bin (for outside), and an instruction leaflet.

To use the service, residents will simply need to empty any food waste they have, such as plate scrapings, peelings, and tea bags into their kitchen caddy. When full, they empty it into their outside food waste bin.

Collections will be every week on the same day as the waste or recycling collection.

In the Malvern Hills District, around 37 per cent of waste in an average bin is food (according to a waste analysis done by Let’s Waste Less in 2021).

When recycled, food waste can be turned into something useful. It will be taken to an anaerobic digestion facility where it is used to generate natural forms of energy, such as biogas, an excellent alternative to fossil fuels and a fertiliser which can be used in farming.

Cllr Jeremy Owenson, Portfolio Holder for Environment at Malvern Hills District Council, said: “We are really excited about introducing our new household food waste collection. The service makes it easy and convenient for residents to recycle their food waste whilst helping to reduce the amount of waste being sent to landfill. Everyone will have some inedible food waste such as eggs shells, tea bags or banana skins, this new weekly collection not only helps reduce waste and provide an opportunity for residents to recycle more but also helps keep household bins cleaner and less full”.
