The Malvern Hills Greener Places Award recognises projects and schemes that are making a positive environmental contribution to places in the district.
We would like the awards to provide a shared learning resource and become case studies for the standards of development and place making that can be achieved.
Awards Criteria
Projects could include built development from individual buildings to whole developments, or involve beneficial land management and biodiversity enhancements, or supporting infrastructure such as renewable energy or transport.
Anything that contributes towards the Malvern Hills district being a more sustainable and climate resilient place may be eligible. However, projects that raise the bar on the following issues would be particularly welcomed:
- Embodied carbon in materials and construction processes
- Energy efficiency and reducing space heating demand
- Utilising low carbon heating systems
- Installing renewable energy technologies
- Improving biodiversity and habitats
- Adapting to the impacts of climate change
- Active and low carbon travel
The key is that the project demonstrates excellence and innovation and establishes what is possible to achieve in terms of sustainable development and place making. It must be reaching above and beyond the basic requirements that may be set through legislation, planning policies and other statutory/legal requirements.
Whilst projects can be granted an award for achieving best practice for a particular element(s), it is expected that the project as a whole can demonstrate a positive environmental impact.
Applicants will be expected to set out clearly and concisely in what ways the project meets the criteria and might be deserving of a Greener Places Award. Reference could be made to how the project performance measures against recognised best practice industry standards where appropriate.
Awards Process
This will a be a rolling awards process where applications can be submitted at any time and projects will be considered throughout the year.
Awards will be granted on individual merit; it is not a competitive process between projects.
Applications will be evaluated by the council’s Environment Panel and include relevant officers. The awards panel may respond to the applicant with clarification questions and a site visit to the project may also be requested if necessary.
The decision of the panel is final.
Making an application
Applications can be submitted by people/organisations directly involved in the project or they may be nominated by someone externally, the council may also identify projects for consideration for an award.
(While nominations are encouraged, consideration for the award is dependent on being able to contact the relevant people/organisation responsible for the project. This is to obtain their consent and access any further information necessary to assess the application).
