Malvern Hills District Council and Malvern Town Council have joined forces to help reduce waste by installing new recycling bins outside schools within the district.
The installation of five trial recycling bins have been put in place outside the two main secondary schools within Malvern, Dyson Perrins and The Chase.
It is hoped that engagement with school pupils will encourage them to use the bins and help foster new habits, which leads to increased and improved recycling within the town and hopefully expansion of this scheme in the future.
The initiative forms part of Malvern Hills District Council's five-year plan environment priority to 'Support initiatives that promote refuse, reduce, reuse, and recycle', it is also part of the Town Council's commitment to its environmental policy and strategy.
Cllr Sarah Rouse, Portfolio Holder for Environment at Malvern Hills District Council, said: "Initiatives such as this will really help boost recycling rates not just at home, but when people are on the go, it will also help encourage our younger generation to recycle when they are arriving or leaving school. Our residents are still recycling more than ever which is great to see, and it is still important to continue to reduce our waste as much as possible, reuse items where we can and recycle the rest."
Cllr Nick Houghton, Mayor of Malvern Town Council said: "It is pleasing to see the first recycling bin funded by Malvern Town Council. We are working collaboratively with MHDC who will empty the bins on our behalf. This is a great demonstration of your local councils working together."
