Eco-friendly renovation works completed on public toilets in Upton

29 January 2024

Renovation works have been completed on a public toilet block in Upton upon Severn.

The toilets, located on Hanley Road Car Park, are now open to the public (Monday 29 January), after an impressive refurbishment.

The eco-friendly project, from Malvern Hills District Council, started in September 2023, totalling approx. £150k.

The works formed part of the council's Five Year Plan to invest in the refurbishment of five town centre toilets by 2025 and reduce the Council's own use of electricity and water.

Great Malvern was one of the first town centre toilets to be completed in April 2022 and the toilet block in Tenbury Wells was completed in June 2023.

The use of electricity will be reduced through the installation of LED Lights and integrated solar panels which are linked to a hybrid battery system. The toilet block will run off this rather than the mains electricity.

As well as this, low flush toilets have been installed which will result in less water usage.

Further improvements made include:

  • New doors
  • Low water usage taps
  • Complete re-tile
  • Re-decoration
  • New cubicles
  • Above and below ground drainage
  • New mechanical and electrical installation
  • New flat roof and rainwater goods

Cllr John Gallagher, Portfolio Holder for Resources at Malvern Hills District Council said: "This refurbishment is a great addition for the town and its visitors. The eco-friendly works will allow water and electricity usage to be reduced, which is also a great benefit for the environment.”
