Households across the Malvern Hills district will now be able to recycle aluminium foil and plastic tubes as part of their kerbside recycling collection.
From this month (April), residents can include the following clean and empty items in their green bin:
- Aluminium foil e.g. kitchen foil, foil trays
- Plastic tubes e.g. toothpaste and cosmetic tubes
These will be collected in the green bins alongside the following materials that have been recycled in the Malvern Hills District and Worcestershire since 2009:
- Metal food and drinks cans
- Plastic bottles, pots, tubs and trays.
Collection days will remain the same and bins should be placed out by 7am on the usual day.
This change supports the Government’s Simpler Recycling policy, which aims to make recycling collections more consistent across England, so everyone can recycle the same materials.
It is hoped that the new changes will help reduce confusion, improve recycling rates, and support national ambitions for 65 per cent of household waste being recycled by 2035.
Cllr Jeremy Owenson, Portfolio Holder for Environment at Malvern Hills District Council, said: “We are so pleased to be expanding our recycling service, which will make it even easier for residents to recycle more from home. By being able to recycle these common everyday items, it will have a big impact on the environment as they can be turned into new products such as new household items and even car parts. Information on how to recycle these items can be found on the council’s website”.
Recycled items collected from residents’ homes are sorted at EnviroSort, Worcestershire County Council’s material reclamation facility in Norton.
They are then sent for reprocessing, where they are cleaned and transformed into new products. Recycling these items saves energy, conserves natural resources and helps keep valuable materials out of landfill.
