Information on the criteria that must be met by any vehicle to be used as a hackney carriage or private hire vehicle is contained in the Council's pdf Taxi Handbook (566 KB) . The Taxi Handbook also contains information on how to apply for a licence to use a vehicle as a hackney carriage or private hire vehicle.
Applying for a licence
Applications must be submitted alongside all required documents as set out in the Taxi Handbook. You can submit your application by post to:

Table of fares
Taxi fares for Hackney Carriages are set by the Council and calculated by a taximeter fitted in the vehicle. Hackney Carriages must be fitted with a taximeter, but it is optional for Private Hire vehicles. The taximeter displays the maximum charge payable for a journey, but drivers are free to charge less than the fee calculated by the taximeter.
