Malvern Hills District Council has been successful in securing £20 million funding from the UK Government to develop Malvern Theatres into a world-class cultural facility.

Malvern Theatres attracts around 300,000 visitors each year. It is operated by the charitable body Malvern Theatres Trust and is on a long-term lease from MHDC.

The aim will be to deliver a world-class cultural facility and transform the visitor economy by attracting 135,000 more attendees and boosting the local economy by £11m annually.

Phase one of the theatre’s redevelopment is already complete, with a vibrant new entrance, disabled access to the theatre from Grange Road and a new ‘Changing Places’ toilet facility. There is also a new studio hosting 21 classes a week (with more planned), as well as youth drama productions and international cinema.

Phase two will see further investment in the site, expanding access to the arts, improving health and wellbeing for the community, increasing education and employment opportunities, and an economic uplift for the region.

Subject to consultation and planning, the development may include a new amphitheatre, a modern 200+ seat studio theatre to host community work, flexible workshop spaces, a recording studio to give a platform to aspiring musicians, an external lift to improve access to the park, and more.

Work is expected to begin in early 2025 and is expected to be completed at the end of 2026.
